What is Pool Resurfacing and How Is It Done?

A swimming pool can be a great source of fun and exercise for the whole family for many years. However, a pool needs maintenance to prevent leaks and continue to look great. When a pool's surface begins to chip or peal, it's time to consider swimming pool resurfacing.

Pool resurfacing or refinishing may sound overwhelming, but it doesn’t need to be. The cost to resurface a pool varies quite a bit since every pool is different. The cost will depend on the size of the pool and the finish used.

Some websites suggest that you can resurface a pool yourself, but that is a big risk if you have never resurfaced a pool before. Fixing mistakes made due to inexperience could end up costing you much more than if you had hired a professional pool refinisher from the start. And even if you do a good job, chances are it's not going to look quite as good as if you had hired a professional. That's why for the best results, we recommend you hire a professional pool refinisher.

Pool Resurfacing Products

The key to a successful pool resurfacing project is to hire a professional contractor that is skilled and experienced with pool finishes. You don’t want a company installing a product they are not familiar with. So, when you're researching pool contractors, ask them which products they install and how much experience they have with each product.

At Grand Vista Pools, we only install Pebble Tec products. We are an authorized installer for Pebble Tec, which means our installers have been trained and have extensive experience with this product. We believe in this product, and are pleased the Pebble Tec company offers a lifetime guarantee.

Preparation for Pool Resurfacing

Another key that will set professional companies apart is the prep work done at the beginning of the project. There are no short cuts to the prep work. If it isn’t done well, you may not notice immediately but you certainly will down the road. We drain the pool, do an acid wash, and apply a bond coat to prepare the pool. The bond coat is important because it helps the new surface to stick to the pool (similar to a coat of primer for a car). A lot of companies cut costs by not using a bond coat, but this can cause the new surface to peel, dramatically reducing the life of your pool's new finish.

Note the effects of poor prep work won’t be evident until the pool contractor is paid and gone. Therefore, it's important to hire a company you trust to do the job right.

At Grand Vista Pools, we are committed to doing the prep work well and using quality materials, so you will be happy with your pool and its new surface for many, many years.
