Pool Refinishing – How is it Done?

A swimming pool can be a source of fun and exercise for the whole family for many years. To do that, however, it needs maintenance to prevent leaks and continue looking great. When the pool surface begins to show its age by chipping or pealing, it probably needs refinishing.

Pool refinishing can sound like an overwhelming option, but it doesn’t need to be. The cost to resurface can vary quite a bit since all pools are different. The cost will depend on the size of the pool and what finish is used.

Some websites suggest that you can refinish a pool yourself, but that is a big risk if you have never refinished a pool before. Fixing mistakes made due to inexperience, could end up costing you much more than if you had hired a professional pool refinisher from the start. And even if you do a good job, chances are it's not going to look quite as good as if you had hired a professional. That's why for the best results, we recommend you hire a professional pool refinisher.

Pool Refinishing Products

The key to a successful pool refinishing project is to hire a professional contractor that is skilled and experienced with pool finishes. You don’t want a company installing a product they are not familiar with. So, check with them to confirm what product or products they install and how much experience they have with that product.

At Grand Vista Pools, we only install Pebble Tec products. We are an authorized installer for Pebble Tec, our installers have been trained and we have extensive experience with this product. We believe in this product, and are pleased the Pebble Tec company offers a lifetime guarantee.

Proper Preparation of the Pool

Another key that will set professional companies apart is the prep work at the beginning of the project. There are no short cuts to the prep work. If it isn’t done well, it will be obvious in the long run. We drain the pool, do an acid wash, and apply a bond coat to prepare the pool. The bond coat is important because it helps the new surface to stick to the pool (kind of like a coat of primer for a car). A lot of companies cut costs by not using a bond coat, but this can result in the new surface peeling off.

Note the effects of poor prep work won’t be evident until the pool contractor is paid and gone, so you want to be sure you trust the company you hire to do the job right.

At Grand Vista Pools, we are committed to doing the prep work well and using quality materials, so you are happy with your pool and the new surface lasts for many years to come.
