Swimming pool water levels can fluctuate a lot making it difficult to tell if a pool has a leak or if water is just being lost through evaporation.
Most people realize pools can lose a lot of water to evaporation in the summer when its hot, but even in the winter when it's cooler, a lot of evaporation can take place due to the lower humidity.
So, how can you tell if a pool has a leak or the water level is dropping due to evaporation?
Here's a clever trick...
Fill a plastic container (a bowl or bucket) three-quarters full of water. On the inside of the container, mark the water line. Place the container in the pool, then mark the water line on the outside of the container. (If the bucket has a handle, remove it to allow for better stability while floating.)
Let it float for two or three days. If the water inside and outside the container has gone down the same amount, your pool is losing water due to evaporation. However, if the pool water level has gone down more than the water inside the bucket, your pool has a leak, and you should probably contact a professional.
If your pool is relatively new, hopefully the pool builder provided a good warranty and they will fix it for you.
If your pool is older, it could be leaks in the pump, filter or pipes going to or from them. Another common place where leaks occur in older pools is between the tiles. IF this is the case, it may be time to renovate your pool and have the tiles replaced.
