The water level in your swimming pool can fluctuate a lot which makes it difficult to tell if your pool has a leak or if water is just being lost through evaporation.
Most people understand pools can lose a lot of water through evaporation in the summer when its hot, but in the winter when it’s cooler the humidity is lower, and dry air causes evaporation.
So, how can you tell if a pool has a leak or the water level is dropping due to evaporation?
Here’s how to figure out if your pool has a leak…
Fill a plastic bucket (or large bowl) 3/4 full of water. On the inside of the bucket, mark the water line. Place the bucket in the pool, then mark the water line on the outside of the container. Note: if the bucket has a handle, remove it so the bucket doesn't lean and potentially tip over.
Let the bucket float for two or three days. If the water inside and outside the container have gone down the same amount, your pool is losing water due to evaporation. However, if the water level of the pool has gone down more than the water level inside the bucket, your pool has a leak, and it'd be a good idea to contact a pool professional.
If your pool is new, hopefully your pool builder provided a good warranty and they will repair the leak for you.
If your pool is older, the leak could be between the tiles. If this is the case, it may be time to renovate your pool and have the tiles replaced. Pool pumps, filters and the pipes going between them and the pool can also develop leaks.
